See Ed Teller's post. Placing the battery in the trunk redistributes the weight and evens out front to rear balance. Note, however, it's important to place the battery in front of the rear axle so as to reduce the "polar moment of inertia". Surprisingly, having just done this, I noticed that I have quicker, more precise, steering response.
