There used to be a website regarding formulae for various octane boosters that could be made at home (You might do a search using AltaVista.com or another search engine). You can obtain the EXACT same materials in bulk that the companies who market the 12 OZ cans use.

One popular one is Toluene, another is acetone. You can buy a gallon of toluene for about $8, while buying octane booster in 12OZ cans would cost about $40 for essentially the same chemical.

They DO work, but it would take about 10% concentration to yield a 5 point increase in octane. You cannot add more than that without possibly damaging plastic or vinyl components of the fuel system since all of teh octane booster components are essentially aromatic solvents.

Do the Octane boosters really do any thing? Are they harmful to your car? Are they just a waste of money?
