Higher octane reduces the peak temperature of combustion and makes the duration of the burn longer. If you don't have detonation (pinging), you are actually reducing power and mileage by reducing the heat the gas puts out. If your car doesn't need it, you're wasting your money.

If your car is stock and is pinging, there's probably some other problem like excessive carbon buildup or a lean fuel mixture. Higher than stock compression or additional ignition advance (such as with chips) can add power, but can also cause pinging and require additional octane. A hotter cam reduces pinging because the cylinder pressure is generally reduced due to the longer duration.

Do the Octane boosters really do any thing? Are they harmful to your car? Are they just a waste of money?
