Don't know about circuit diagrams, but I can tell you that the electrical connection of the gauge to the circuit board is a common source of this problem. Same with the fuel gauge. Clean all the parts with a wire brush and reassemble, and your problem may be gone.

I'm not sure if the batteries are involved with the temperature gauge, but they can leak and wipe out the circuitry in their immediate area.

I have an intermittent temperature guage on my 85 520i. Does the back up battery have anything to do with this. Does anyone know a site where I can obtain circuit diagrams, I am an electronic technician by trade, it shouldn't be too hard if I can source the circuit diagrams.
