The battery test is destructive. Stop it. Instead, put an ohmmeter in place of the battery- positive to positive, negative to negative. Then start poking around.With the ignition off, you should see very high resistance, like 1 kohm or more. If you get instant smoke I'd guess you'll see less than 100 ohms, and probably a dead short.
My guess is that anything that would cause instant smoke would have blown a fuse if there were a fuse in line with the problem.
