The meter advice is good if you have one. I was assuming that you don't. I would try the meter, or the test with the starter disconnected for sure.

PS, TAKE THE CAR! You will love it, and most of us on the board think that the E-28 was one of the best BMWs ever. I have 2 of them, love both. It is well worth the price of the starter motor. It is a great driving and handling car, and mechanically is pretty straightforward to work on. Parts are reasonable, and you will learn a lot.

Good luck! And remember, TAKE THE CAR! Get some friends and push it to your garage!!!!

Thanks again. My neighbor is actually giving me the car, but if this turns out to be a major ordeal I may not take it. The car was actually in good shape, but this recent development is disconcerting to say the least. I'm going out to try and find the problem again, I'll let you know what I find out.
