'97 528i automatic ventilation?? (archive)

Recently purchased a '97 528i, and noticed something strange. When I get in the car first thing in the morning, I can hear a faint noise, like a fan, humming underneath the center control console. Doesn't matter if it's 60 degrees, or 30 degrees outside. Doesn't seem to happen at any other time. Any ideas what this is??
