Questions:
Was the ECU above the glove box actually exchanged, and did the problem remain? Your post implies that it was, and it did.

Is the time from start to stall consistant? Or is it a random short amount of time?

Did the tach and fuel economy gauges act up when the car was running correctly? If so, it sounds like the instrument cluster computer board is bad. This is a common problem. It has nicad batteries that probably need to be replaced. If this is the problem with your instruments, it has nothing to do with your stalling problem.

The ECU sounds like a possible culprit, assuming it wasn't exchanged for a known good ECU. There is a common failure inside the unit- the connections to a large transister fail and need to be resoldered. This failure causes spark problems.

I had an intermittent stall on my '86 535i. I think I've fixed the problem (it's OK so far). It turned out the engine ground strap was loose at the firewall.

Well, it starts about 30 sec. and die.

Because I am not a mechanic and here are the facts told by my mechanic.

He first suspected electrical system, not fuel or battery system, was the cause.

He knew sparks fire but not consistent and it's kind of on or off and weak.

He had made several calls and two areas were suggested to focus:
1. Exchange of whole computer case under the glove box
but no luck.
2. Crack sensor? he has not done anything but suspected.
3. RPM sensor? he did get the part and replaced, and it starts for 30 sec. and die.
Because I was aware of RPM and Mileage gauges were acting up and down or no action at all sometimes. Although I do not know if this was an initial sign, which caues the final break down eventually or this is something else.

Anyway, any suggestions are welcome!!!!
