My 86 528e has 156k and when I tired to remove the fan in order to replace timing belt, water pump etc. I couldn't get it off regardless of what I tried. I don't think that fan has ever been off! Anyway, I would up taking the water pump off with the fan still attatched! I took it to a shop and used a vise to hold the water pump rod (I had to take off the water pump fins) and whacked away at the 32mm wrench and it finally came loose. I even took it to a grage first and the guy there couldn't move it. The vise has to be as tight as you can get it if anyone evers runs into this problem.

I did install a thermostat per everyone's advice and my car is running just a little below half, right where it should be. Thanks for the tips everone, this is one great forum.

P.S. Got my Bentley book today. Totally awesome!

i used a 24" pipe wrench on my 528e this summer.
