Not overly difficult, just a bit of a PITA at times. I changed my upper and lower ones on both sides, and the most aggrivating part is the stuborn ball joints. They just don't drop free, you have to beat on them with a hammer using forces that are just bonejarring. Then heat them with a torch and do it all over and over again. Tip, to gain better access to the baqll joints, remove the 3 13mm bolts holding the ball joint mounting plate to the bottom of the strut housings, this way you have more room to work with.

I've replaced all 14 ball joints under my e28 and have really developed a strong hatred for those stuborn things.

If you've done mechanical work before, this is a doable job for you. Just take your time and remember to beat the living hell out of the arms to get that ball joint to drop. New ones make a big difference.
