Steve, Getting rid of the 528e? As someone who has follwed the same course, I can tell you its worth it! I know you live in an area with a high level of stop-n-go, but think about a 5sp car. I somewhat reluctantly bought one, an 88 535i, with the thought that the car was in great condtion and that was worth more than the trans choice. Having driven both man and auto 535i before buying this one, I really felt the 535i engine is less suited to auto use than the 528e. So, my point is that even in seattle traffic, with a worn clutch, which makes pedal effort very high, I would not go back to an auto. As far as the car you looked at, I think its good you found one with a bad trans before buying it. Most of the 22e trans last about 150k anyway. If the car is good otherwise, I would factor 2k for a quality trans rebuild and you're off! A good (very good) trans shop would render that unit better than new, with the proper updates, etc. Good luck with your car search!

Looking at 86 535I...owner reports everything great one day, next day trans only works in 3rd and reverse.

His outlook is it must be minor electronic issue...what do you think?

Approximately 150K on car.

THANKS!
