Very common. I thought I had a fuel pump going out and my mechanic said that it was fine. He said that every 535 he has ever seen has had this fuel/exhaust smell in the trunk and he's been seeing them since the 80's. He says his smells that way too. It may be a fuel pump but I can tell you my trunk has a gas smell in it and the fuel pump is fine.
