the inline 6 engine (probably true with V12 also) is the only engine that produces NO external forces. all of the shaking forces and shaking moments are cancelled out by each other. Many car makers used this design for years because of this fact, but because of our friend, Mr. FWD car, they couldn't fit an inline 6 into the engine compartment. The V6 engine is known to be shorter, and they've engineered the crank angles to be pretty good at cancelling the shaking force and shaking moment, but they are still present. If anyone cares to see the differential equations worked out for this one, I'll do it. This is about the only thing I learned in Dynamics of Machines class ;-)
