If you unplugged the single wire (usually green) on passenger side firewall and still have the hesitation, then the O2 sensor is probably OK. By unplugging the wire, the computer uses a preset value for the mixture, which is usually rich enough that it allows the car not to hesitate or surge.

Look in the archives for AFM Calibration if all the other components check out (DME engine temp sensor, AFM temp sensor, plugs/wires/cap and rotor, fuel pressure, etc.). The Bentley gives the proper values for the sensors to compare to yours for diagnosis.

Have been having problems with my 83 528e hesitating. I feel I may have a defective O2 sensor but am not sure. I have unplugged the single wire connector and still have the same indications. Does this mean the sensor is potentially bad...or good? I guess my troubleshooting skills aren't what they used to be. Any help appreciated.
