I think when I suggest "perfect" in terms of my 535is I mean "fully operational". All the bulbs were replaced with new ones from BMW that have the silver colored tin backing. The bulb holders were not replaced so maybe that is something to investigate further. You are right though, the brass backed bulbs that you find at the local auto parts store will sometimes provide a false reading to the check brain and can damage it too.

i have no great desire for perfection, the bormann 6 hasthe same quirky brake light check thing going on. ive heard that your 1156 bulbs should be tinned not brass and that all 3 bulbs should be replaced when 1 blows. this is done in order to prevent the check relay from reading different resistance values of the bulbs as a blown bulb.
