Help!! Yesterday while backing my '87 528e out of the driveway, when I went to put it into 1st, I heard a little grinding then...Kaput...nothing. It feels like the shift linkage isn't even connected (it is, I jacked up the car and looked). Does anyone have any idea what this could be? When I shift through the gears, it won't go into any of them. The clutch feels fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the two bolts that secure the shift frame to the transmission case. These bolts can tend to loosen and fall out and then the linkage will not work properly. There are also two bolts that secure the mounting points to the frame on the top side that are harder than hell to spot missing. I have experienced both types of problems and both gave me fits.
Good Luck,

Tom M in PA
