Power steering cut our for 30 seconds??? (archive)

My power steering cut out for 30 seconds this morning while I was navigating a narrow snow covered alley, and it was quite a troubling experience. I do get a howl when it is cold outside (-15 celcius), for a few minutes until the car has warmed up a bit, but all the belts are tight. I do not see any leaks (although there is some moistue) and I have never had to top up the fluid

I have checked the archives, but did not find anything of use, except for a note that someone with a leak and a howl replaced their hoses and found both the leak and the howl went away. I have checked my Bentley manual but the diagnostics don't really cover this. (only suggestions are bad pump and air in system).

TIA

Anyway. I am at a loss and do not want to bring the car to the shop (especially since the problem happened once, so there is not much to show), but I don't want to get stuck with a locked steering wheel (or worse, no brakes) while ferrying the kids around.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
