VALVE LASH?????? .30mm?????????? (archive)

What is the proper valve lash on a 87 3.4 litre (M30) when the engine is cold?????
Bentley says .30mm, however when i took the valve cover off i noticed that the valves were adjusted around .25 -.27mm.

I am adjusting them becuse i could hear the valves ticking while running.. Now when readjusted to .30 the motor sounds even worse.. Ticking like a diesel!

Should i go back and reajust them to .25 or is it normal for this engine to make so much noise??????
