I also owned a 2002 (in fact many of them in series) before I bought my 1985 535i for $3500 CDN (about $2200 US)about three years ago. It is the perfect replacement for the 2002 in that it has a similar power band (but it starts lower and is more robust) and handles incredibly well for a four door. My biggest regret is that I didn't spend more money oin the purchase price and get a new 535 (like a 1988) with working a/c and less necessary repairs in the first year. I suggest you read old post using the search engine to get an idea of typical repairs. Best of luck
I am interested in a late 80's 5 series and do not know much about them. I have spent most of my time on my 2002's so any pointers on which to look for and what to watch out for would be helpful. I am located in Southern New Hampshire and would be interested in hearing about any 5- series that are up for sale in the New England area, I would love an M5 but the price is keeping me away. Thanks, Joe
