This is still my biggest problem with the diagnosis.
I removed the starter, brought it to AutoZone, they tested it and said it looked great. (Of course, no one said the AutoZone guys are BMW experts). I examined a new stater, and found the teeth on the gear to be about the same.
I would think that if there were broken or missing teeth it would miss at least once per revolution.
Well, when I tried to start it with the old starter re-installed (working exactly the same as it had earlier today), I see the answer. When the starter is grinding, the engine is turning. I can observe the fan jumping forward in spurts as the starter grinds past each tooth, but only turning the motor at 1/10 the speed at it should.
I could clearly see the teeth on the flywheel through the starter whole, and while they showed some wear, you could also see where the starter engages, and that mark was 1/2 down the tooth.
The dilemna is, when the starter suddenly "works", it works perfectly - engaging all the teeth with apparently full force.
When it is grinding, is the small gear not going forward enough, and therefore catching on the front, finally being lined up well enough to catch normally? Or is the small gear going out far enough, but then being bounced over the top of the teeth without proper engagement?
And finally, it would seem that I could do something to cause it to cure itself all of the time. (Or, I could pull the tranny in the morning...)
