If you're not using your brakes your are going too slow... seriosuly (I know this is the street so don't take this the wrong way, it is really meant towards track) the brakes are there for a reason and I don't understand why people think that if they can drive a section without using their brakes they are going faster. Do you ever see a Rally driver or an F1 driver say in an interview that he/she drove the whole course without using their brakes? no... use yoru brakes, use them often.. it allows you to drive much faster and it is alot safer than just using throttle.
My favorite is Skyline to Grizzly Peak, stretching from the Oakland Hills to Albany... I get this EVERY DAY as my commute drive! And people wonder why I don't drive something more "sensible"!!!
It's a blast, the best way I can imagine to start the day. No traffic, wonderful and serious twisties, breathtaking views. Most of it cuts through East Bay regional parks. AWESOME.
The drive is certainly more fun in my e30, but the e28 is no slouch. I can blast through it faster than most of the "pretender" cars out there, the mustangs and camaros and hondas and toyotas. Funny watching those boy racers take off like rockets, only to see their brake lights lighting up every time they hit a curve when they panic and realise this isn't a drag strip! I do the whole ride without touching my brakes except of course for the 2 stop signs.(I will admit I have an advantage, knowing every inch of the road)
I'd advise taking it slow the first coupla times until you get to know it. This is NOT a road you wanna make a miscalculation on. Steep cliffs. One lady went off it and they didn't find her or her car for 2 years!!! Also, gotta watch for the occasional deer, and fog can make it scary if you don't know the road.
After working on my car this weekend a little bit, I took my wife and some cameras and went exploring in the south bay. Ended up driving Calvaras rd. east of Milpitas. Whew hoo!!
If any South/East Bay people want to get together next weekend and go for a ride, lemme know.
