I love my 535is built in 9/86! My humble words of "wisdom" one in good condition with a thorough maintenance history unless you plan to do much or the work yourself or can have the labor done cheaply. I would buy a manual tranny unless you don't mind dropping $1.5-2k in a rebuild, another tranny, or doing a changeover to manual. Once again, if you can spin a wrench it will cost less. I wouldn't let the auto tranny deter you from buying an otherwise clean, well-cared for example. Finally, be sure to read the mound of information on buying a used e28 available on the web. Chris Guy's page several others provide great information on pre-purchase information. These sources will also let you know what is easy to fix yourself and cheaply...and what's NOT cheap (e.g., blown head gasket, bottom end engine work, tranny work, complete suspension overhaul, etc.). This stuff isn't cheap on ANY car these days.

The MPG that I see varies between 15-17 in town and 24-25mpg on the highway..with o2 sensor unplugged.

Buy a Bentley manual, read this forum, join BMW-digest, perhaps the UUC-Digest and talk to other owners.

Best of luck...these are cars one CAN get passionate about.

I want some owner comments about that car and also comments considering fuel consumption are welcome (especially in winter). I appreciate all kind of comments what you have about that cars.
