Hi Stuart,

Fret ye no longer. Like you and Tim in Central Jersey, I too have this problem with my 87 535is. The problem has greatly improved with the switch to BMW synthetic gearbox fluid. I've also heard many here highly recommend Redline MTL...which I will switch to next time I change it. Like you, the problem is temp related...my tech recommended cycling through the gears before starting off after car is started from dead cold. Advice...switch to Redline MTL immediately. Read the other posts on this topic by scanning the archives...lots of good info there.

Cheers,
Tim

Lately I have had trouble putting my car into gear (manual tranny) when it's cold. I have to let it warm up before I can put it in any gear, and shifting is almost impossible for a while. After about 15 min. or so of driving (usually around town only in 2nd :( it will gradually get better to the point where I can shift it almost normally (albeit a bit stiff). If I drive the car a lot in any given day it will get to the point where it's normal. Would a worn clutch cause this? Does anyone have any experience with similar problems? I'd appriciate any feedback. TIA

Stuart
