BMW didn't see fit to put a headlight warning on my e28. The chime unit works if I haven't buckled my seatbelt, or if I leave my keys in the accessory or run position and open the doors. It also plays a slightly different tone if the outside temperature goes below 36F, or if I exceed a preset speed (a feature I don't use).

The chime unit is hidden behind the driver's kick panel, forward of the driver's left knee. It's a black plastic box with two electrical connectors. One connector has three wires, and one has two.

The two-wire connector controls the "key is in lock" repetitive "bong-bong-bong." The three-wire connector is the "temperature alert" single "bong."

Hope this helps.

You guys all seem so good at fixing others problems I had to come up with something I needed fixed and I just remembered when someone said they added a diode and speaker to their car to alert them when the headlights were on and the key was out.

Well I have had my '88 535is for 3 years and I just remembered that whenever I open the door with the lights on or whatever there is no chime.. my little buzzer is either dead or disconnected... can someon please tell me where it is so I can take a look?
