In my consideration of performance enhancing computer chips, I found the following article that seemed helpful. Perhaps this has already been discussed on this forum. If so, sorry for the re-run...

ABSTRACT: The results are presented of rigorous testing of six computer
chips from five manufacturers in the cars of their choice:
BMW M coupe with AutoThority reprogram, BMW 328i with Dinan
reprogram, Chevrolet Camaro Z28 SS six-speed with JET chip,
Chevrolet Z28 auto with JET chip, Chevrolet Silverado with
Hypertech reprogram, and Mercury Cougar with Superchips chip.
These chips did offer more performance gains on automatic-
transmission-equipped autos, but of the three manual cars
tested, only the Dinan reprogram showed a small performance
