They are thin sounding. The heads units don't work well and don't last long (scratchy volume control, broken tape decks). The amps are noisy. The speakers sound like crap and they have no power handling to speak of because they use cheap drivers and cheap crossovers. The enclosures in the body/chassis are too small. The only thing I like about BMW stereo's was in my 535is I could tune into the weather band. Now THAT was COOL!!
The good news is that BMW interiors are perfect for installing good stereo equipment. Easy dash access. Easy wiring runs to the trunk. Good speaker placement options, unless you like bass drivers up front like me.
With that said, I have a fully functional am/fm cassette deck out of my 85 535i. It works great. If you want it, make me an offer.
