Feel around the inside channel under the trunk seal. Sometimes rust will eat under the rubber seal (which could be fine) and leak into the trunk through pin hole rist holes. Crud, pine needles, etc. hold the moisture there and encourage the corrosion.

Even dry coutry cars can suffer from this just from weekly car washes.

There continues to be a water leak into the trunk of my son's 87 535i. Water appears in the driver side trunk corner nearest to rear seat. Could this be from the sunroof drains-I heard they drain out the rear roof pillars. The rear glass seals look ok as do the trunk seal and rear tail light seals. any ideas? thanks!
