Ok, I'm the worst person to speak of cold running problems since I have the one E28 that has the motronic 1.1 where there is no cold start valve or thermo-time switch, but here it goes. You don't mention a problem starting your car so there's nothing wrong with this valve or switch.
In the Bentley it says there's also cold running enrichment on these cars. The coolant temp sensor or switch, depending on model, tells the ECU to adjust injector open time to compensate for temperature. Why don't you check your sensor/switch? Perhaps it's telling the ECU that the engine is warm too early and it, in turn, stops cold enrichment. If you don't have the Bentley let me know and I'll give you the voltage and resistance numbers, although you'll need a multimeter. That should be the problem unless it's something else. :)))
