I do my own oil changes and its easy. Drain the oil from the pan first and then remove the oil filter. Replace the pan drain bolt and replace the filter with a new one then add new oil in the amount specified in the manual. I have been paying just over $4.00 a quart for Mobil 1. The Bently manual suggests replacing the drain bolt washer. Also be sure to not overtighten either the drain bolt or the oil filter. The filter boxes normally have tightening instructions.

On my 528E a lift is not required for the oil change, but changing the transmission fluid probably does. I am planning to change my transmission fluid also since I have no idea when it was last done (I've only had the car a month). On a manual tranmission is just a matter of draining the old oil and replacing with new oil of the proper type and grade. On an automatic it is probably more complex.

I don't know how much a BMW mechanic would charge to do this.


Just bought a 533i (83) and it is due for an oil change (every 3000 right?) My question is, should I have the transmission oil changed while they are at it, should it be done by a bmw mechanic, and about how much can I expect to pay for an oil change (synthetic)? Is it possible for me to do it myself or does the car need to be on a lift?
