Just bought a 533i (83) and it is due for an oil change (every 3000 right?) My question is, should I have the transmission oil changed while they are at it, should it be done by a bmw mechanic, and about how much can I expect to pay for an oil change (synthetic)? Is it possible for me to do it myself or does the car need to be on a lift?

Dan is dead on regarding the oil change, really simple. One caveat, if your replacement filter does not include a new metal gasket for the filter can bolt. Go to your local BMW dealership and buy several, before you change the oil. Ditto for the oil pan bolt.

Regarding the transmission oil change, before you pull the bottom plug and drain the oil. Make sure you can get the fill plug out. Both the drain and fill plugs take a large allen, I think it's 17mm to remove, and they tend to be TIGHT AS S**T if they haven't been removed in a while.

BTW, did you get my e-mail message ?
