Sorry to hear you lost. Glad to hear you got to see an e39 M5!! :-) Here in central Louisiana, I've seen ONE, and I was awestruck. My GAWD!

Anyway, as the subject says, I've been thinking about building a killer e28 "project/track car." The track car part is kinda iffy, b/c I have no clue what division this thing would run in ANYTHING (SCCA, BMW Club Racing, etc). I know the pricetag for all the work on this thing would be running well up into the $20ks and possibly even the 30s, but, hey, it's worth a shot if I've got the cash, right?!! :-)

Here's what I've thought about so far. . .

Drivetrain:
rebuilt e34 (turbo? NA?) M5 engine (possibly around 450+ hp???)
removed cat-back
AWD transplanted from e30 (if possible. I'm sure this is where most of the work will go, and maybe the money)

With the AWD, you don't need to run 275s in the rear; just about 235s in the rear and 215s or 225s in the front (whatever the largest is that you can run w/o rubbing)

Other stuff (weight reduction, etc):
Removed rear seat
Carbon fiber racing seats in front
Carbon fiber fenders and hood (I've actually seen someone advertising these for an e28; I'm sure they run a pretty penny)
Removed spare tire (or leave it there for weight balance)
Relocate battery to trunk
Remove windshield washer system, wiper system, all other crap you don't need (AC system, power windows and locks, all interior bits like carpet and door trim)
Upgraded suspension, of course

Ummm, I think that's about all I had come up with, if I remember correctly.

I had estimated that the end result would be about 475 - 500 hp (if not more; remember, this is a racing engine, not a street engine) moving about 2500 - 2600 lbs. That's about a 5lb/hp ratio, beating Vettes, M5s, and anything else you can find.

I really haven't put too much thought into this. It's just a what-if type deal, but just think about what that monster could do!!

If I can find the time (and gumption) to sit down and draw this thing out (price, exact specs, etc), I'm thinking I'll be starting this little project some time around the fall of this year (2001).

Anyone have any thoughts?

Much of what you want I've already seen in this car (600+ hp out of a M30 engine).

But wait.....

it's an E12! not a E28....
