In Oregon, all you have to do is drive the car in for inspection, and it has to meet physical legal req... fenders, horn, glass, etc.(We have no emission insp here) I have done this with both cars and motorcycles.... This assumes that documentation of ownership was surrendered when the car was totalled. A salvage title dates the car as a current year (year of the salvage title) so that it will be properly disclosed as salvage. If it runs and drives well, what's the problem with that?

Persist, contact motor vehicles. It's probably much simpler than you think. The salvage person would probably more likely part out the car, so his info may be a bit suspect.
