Would a rectangular airfilter that would sit in the the stock housing work better? It would make sense that it would since it was designed for air to flow through as a cone that sits alone. A cone seems like it uses the available air around it instead of the stock square box that was designed to have air flow through it.
I know from some experience with the Fox based 5.0 Mustangs that the cone generally was coupled with some type of inlet to allow some air into the engine compartment. Maybe I'm missing info about more air getting into the engine compartment but it seems like the big square K&N would be more effective.
Just a guess from a seriously rank amateur who knows nothing about engines, etc. Don't take my opinion seriously, just posing a question.
