Sounds as if it could be the center support bearing on the driveshaft. The rubber surround breaks down and tears over time. Get underneath the car, grab hold of the driveshaft near the bearing and push it up and down. If you have a lot of play then this bearing needs replacemnent. Quite simple repair really, but requires removal of the driveshaft. The hard part is wrestling with the driveshaft where it bolts to the rubber donut up by the transmission. Be sure to mark the 2 halves of the driveshaft in relation to each other because it is balanced. Good luck.

86 535i automatic.
when its cold, and i accelerate slowly away, i get a vibration and a knocking sound, it sounds like its coming from the tunnel directly below the handbrake area. it also does it when i am slowing down, and get to about 5 mph. it is a distinct mechanical knocking, like something is actually hitting against something else.
The odd thing is that once the car is fully warmed up, it goes away.
Any thoughts? Thanks!
