Usually the carrier bearing, but check teh rear subframe mounts. If they break loose inside, they'll THUMP on initial take-off and subsequent on-throttle shifts as the subframe hits the chassis.You can pry on the subframe or have someone watch under the car whe you start off to see movement.Bob
I just bought a 1986 528E. The seller told me he replaced the auto trans and the carrier bearing. On takeoff and shifting there is a thumping noise that sounds like it is under the center of the car. I doesn't feel like the trans is slipping. Could it be differential?
