When the speedometer stops working,the first thing to check,as Rob mentions,is the plug in the diff.
When the odometers gears stop,which is a chronic problem in e30/e28/e24/ and e23 cars,its the little plastic gears in the odometer.Happens so often I keep repaired units on hand for our local customers.Most repairs run $125/165+labor.
If you don't have access to a repair facility like Overseas Speedometer,who is good and reliable,I trade rebuilt units,(plus core charge),for $125+ S&H UPS,if it helps any.
On 1985 cars,I need to know the month of mfr.,as the boards and guages split in the middle of that year.
