in as much as BMW did away with these bumpers on their post 88 vehicles, especially in the e30 and e24 models. There is less impact protection which is why I leave my rear bumper uncollapsed. The way I view it is that I have a lot more control over front end damage than over rear impacts. Obviously, T-bone, or broadside type accidents are the exception. The trade off IMHO is a much more aesthetically pleasing front end. Hope that helps, Chris
