The US bumpers were created to appease our facist beaurocracy. Other than protect you in straight on parking lot bumps, they don't do much else. The way I figure it, if you get hit hard, you're going to have a lot of repairs to do, regardless of weather your bumpers absorbed 5mph (isn't that the rating?) of shock or not. FWIW, euro bumpers offer very little protection...
