When you say: "Put a jack under the differential and see if you can lift it." Do you mean putting the jack under there for the fix or for the check?

Check your differential mount.It's at the rear/top of the differential.Four bolts hold the mount to the car&one large bolt holds the differential to the mount.Put a jack under the differential and see if you can lift it.$90-5 bolts-1/2 hour.
I just bought a 1986 528E. The seller told me he replaced the auto trans and the carrier bearing. On takeoff and shifting there is a thumping noise that sounds like it is under the center of the car. I doesn't feel like the trans is slipping. Could it be differential?
