i love my 86 535i, but its nothing compared to a modern car on the highway. Like a new 3 or 5 series, or a newer MB, you can be going 100 and it REALLY feels like you are not moving. or even a Jetta V6 like I drove last week.

the E28 is a brick aerodynamically, and has all sorts of trim sticking out in the air, that it is impossible for it to not have wind noise at 80, at least relative to a newer car.

My 535 can easily cruise at 85, and I do it all the time, but I definately feel like I am going 85, with all the wind and tire noise. Its very primitive, relative to my 2001 MB.

My '85 535i is doing something really odd. When I cruise on the interstate at 80-85mph, the car is so smooth, stable and quiet that subjectively, it seems to be crawling along. I don't want to go any faster, as most of my driving is within the lines of a medium metropolitan area, and the local gendarmery are somewhat ticket happy. (Can't afford the tickets OR the points...)

My question then, is it really more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow? It seems like my car is overqualified for the driving I get to do. I do occasionally get to storm some curvy four lane rural highways and teach "lesser" (and frequently much newer...) cars just exactly who's who! Oh well, maybe the old girl's not going to waste after all!

peace to all-
Bil

K&N cone (it really does help-ignore the naysayers)
///M5 wheels
Fast, fun, and in inconspicuous Bronzit, pretty stealthy!
