This is the list that I have compiled for putting other BMW wheels on the e28. I'd appreciate it if anybody would like to correct me if I am wrong.

E12: 14" no problem but yuk.
E28: metrix rims, what we are all trying to avoid.
E39 17” (540i) offset 20mm 7.5X16 33front, 26mm rear. 5mm spacers in front.
E34 – The "whitewall" M5 wheels are 17” but are pretty hard to find.
E23 - Old 7er rims are are 16x8 offset 23mm and are a popular choice for no fitment problems and wide tire choices.
e31 and e32: These 16" rims may rub strut with larger tires, but otherwise a good choice.
