I know exactly what you mean Mike. My parents first bought the car in 86 new(535i). We have always left it in the garage and no matter what, if there was a problem and it needed to be fix, we fixed it cuz money is not an option for us when it comes to our e28(right guys? :])
Well until about 4 yrs. ago, I pretty much decided to take care of this car like it was a girl, treat it good, not be hard on it( well maybe I do treat my car better than my girlfriends?) any ways I got it painted Metallic Grey, added 16' Borbet wheels, K&N air filter( get that no matter what its a great investment), new shocks, springs, short shift kit, tinted windows, new stereo system, hell even new carpet mats, lit window switches, MOMO knob and shift boot.
Now for the engine etc., same engine with 205k, OE transmission, but need new clutch, cat. converter, and muffler about 3 yrs. ago.
I don't mean to sound like I'm bragging, but I am just trying ot get my point across that in my opinion these cars are worth every investment you could possibly think of.
If you have a problem ask the board or read the Bentley, both are excellent sources and also the e28 web pages as well.

I still have figured out why I love my car so much really! but soon I will have to get her a new paint job, buy a good cover and park her in the garage or let my brother take care of her I hope! cuz I'm transfering to the University of Tennessee in August.
So anyways I hoped I've help and if you need some advice email me or any of these other great guys on the board.
Be good and remember you have... The Ultimate Driving Machine!

Brett

Scottie,

Hey, yeah I didn't mean to sound like I hated my E28 or something, 'cause I love her(despite her purple color), and if I get a E34 in August(my goal), I'm not going to let my E28 go b/c 1)she's only worth about 2k(and that's how much I paid and it would not be worth all of the time I've put into her), and 2)I like her way too much to part with her, so my sister will get my Bimmer for a first car. You know how you mentioned the Bavarians not wanting to lock themselves out? Well, I almost did that last night b/c of my crazy trunk button depite my efforts to lube them--but that's okay, it's usually only in the winter b/c of the temp.

I'd love to put new wheels on my car(I have '14 from an 28e on now), get a new hood(previous owner used a sledge to close it b/c the shocks and hinges on the hood had probs, but there's only a average-to-minor dent)), get my car a new stereo, put in new speakers, add a sub-woofer, get a new front air dam(the one that's on there now is chipped and has a few dents), and even add some performance mods to it, but I'll never get the money back in return(cars aren't exactly good investments) and I'd rather save the money for an E34.
As to the original motor, I'm pretty sure that the original owner must've driven it like a mad man.

Still, I treat my 535i(which really isn't in that bad of shape--average for the age) like a queen.

-Mike
