Help me understand stereo wiring... (long) (archive)

I'm just about to begin installing a Blaupunkt Toronto in my '87 535is and have many questions. Thanks for your help!

1. Should I use the factory amp or just junk it? Do I get better sound if I use it? (I ordered that Soundgate device per Crutchfield recommendation)

2. Which wires (on the head unit) are for:
Power antenna
Continuous power
Ignition on power
Speakers

3. Is there a dimmer wire?

4. I planned on re-wiring all the speakers since they use a common ground. Is this necessary?

5. How are the tweeters by the side view mirrors wired?

Any other advice?

I'm a novice when it comes to stereo setup - so bear with me, eh?

Thanks,

Doug
