I've been keeping track of what people have had success with and putting it down in a spreadsheet. Robert Ledesma's 1988 535iS has similar setup (on the front at least). His fronts are 20mm offset and required a 5mm spacer; with your offset being 22mm, you will very likely need spacers too.

I'd like to buy the following for my '88 535i w/ a 22mm offset:

2 PIECE BMW ALLOY ALUMINUM RIMS WHEELS FROM A1999 5 SERIES E39 AND ARE STYLE#5,
BOLTED CROSS SPOKE. THESE RIMS ARE 17" X 8. THESE RIMS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION
AND ALL 4 CENTERS ARE INCLUDED. THEY ARE FACTORY ORIGINAL BMW RIMS.

Aside from the usual due-diligence, will these work on my car without fender modification?
Everything is standard on my 535i (shocks, etc.) and what size tires will work (235/45 17)?

BMW dealer no help.

You'll need to use spacers in the front to prevent tire/strut interference. Also the E39 wheels have larger hubs, so you will need centering rings to keep the wheels hubcentric.

On the rear you can just about count on rolling or trimming the fender lips with this wheel / tire combo. Check the archives, there are huge numbers of posts regarding this very subject.
