I bought an 88 535i in November 00 that had 153,000 miles on it for $4,300. However, the car was in impeccable condition and was thoroughly checked out be a BMW mechanic prior to purchase. Most mechanics will to a pre-purchase inspection for about $80. It is the best money you can spend. I had taken another car (87 535i) to the same mechanic with a $4,000 asking price but only 123,000 miles to find out the car needed about $3,000 of work in the very short term and maybe more in the mid term.
