My idle is very erratic when the car is at a stand still 5-7. If I am at a light and the idle is bouncing up and down and i shift into neutral it jumps to 1000 rpm and then settles back at 5-7 and jumps in that range car also vibrates. All the plugs are good and compression is good in all cyls.
There is a small metal wrapping around the twin pipes in front of the cat and this is loose and a small hole has developed in one of the pipes. The casing on the Catalytic converter has also rusted through in a couple of spots.
I dont know how the catalytic converter is structured it seems like there is a sort of aluminum casing around the actual piece which has rusted through and whatever is inside is fine no air comming from around that area just from teh hole in front .
There is also a faint smell of gas inside the car and greater outside the car. ]
1. Is there any difinitive way to tell if this is the CC or some other problem with maybe the ignition or fuel system.
2. Can someone please describe the structure of the CC
3. Would a stuffed up cat cause the above problems including a non steady flow through the muffler?
4. If the cc is bad I would llike to remove it completely
by cutting out the pipe infront of it wher ethe hole is and a little behind it and replaceing it with pipes.
HOw much does the noise level increase
and what will it do to the performance ie gas consumption and other important areas...
I have also read that people "Broom handel" their cats.... How do i do this?
I am losing coolant. ITs not going into the oil that checks out ok...and it is not leaking around the Throttle body..
Someone on the board had indicated that their coolant was getting into the heater core and the interior of their car smelled a bit like coolant...
Can you futher describe this sort of problem and how I can tell if this is where my coolant is going...
Any other possiblities?
