There's a large nut under the dash that connects the steering column to the rod through the fire wall. Tighten it up. This nut acts just like a drill tightening onto a drill bit. I replaced most of the front end components and still had play. Replaced the universal steering joint...still play.

Tightening this nut took all the play out of the steering. Also, the steering is much easier and crisper. Really wished I had done this sooner!!

Good luck!

Hi guys.
Can u guys give me advice on the following on my e28:
- when driving, the steering feels loose. i can turn the steering a few degrees without the tyres moving direction. hopefully this is not a big problem. i have an e34 an it feels tight compared to this.
- the tripometer's dead. the speedometer's ok but the tripometer doesn't work. it's one of those analogue ones. what should i replace here?

i just finished fiixing a lot of things on this car, and just got it back on the road.

thanx in advance for any input.
