Because the plastic tabs holding the magnet are fragile, I'd heartily recommend biting the bullet and getting off the wallet for your $18.97 entire part. The glycol in the antifreeze stiffens the tabs and makes them brittle.

I'm not sure if you can buy just the float, I'd doubt it. BUT.....I'm sure you could get a used one from your freindly neighborhood scrap yard.

Can you buy just a float itself (I assume that it contains the ctuating magnet) or you have to buy entire level switch assembly???

He's right, check the coolant level, if it's ok, either clean the sensor (pull blade terminal and unscrew from reservoir) or replace it ($20). My magnet disentegrated on mine when I attempted to clean it. Fortunately a replacement was w/in walking distance.
