87 535i On the way to work this morning, in Atlanata about 50 degrees outside, my car had a strong fuel smell. It has been much colder than 50 in the mornings in Atlanta lately. I stopped to take a quick look and saw no fuel leaks or vacumm leaks. I looked by the fuel filter also and did not see or smell any fuel. I have a fuel presure gage and the psi was fine. When I looked at the onboard computer, the "range" function was dropping drastically while just sitting at idle in traffice. I moved about 10 feet in 2 min. and the "range" function went from 94 to 90 in that time. When I got on the highway the "range" rose while I was driving from 74 to 77. I know my SI batteries are not always functioning properly because my tach is eratic sometimes, but I did not think this would effect the onboard computer. It seems that the computers temp.,clock, works but the avg miles per gal. and avg speed seems to be inaccurate. Any way, could the coolant temp. sensor be bad, making the car run lean and not go into normal operating mode. Also, my gage always shows the car temp. to be just over the blue, seems too cold that is why I was thinking it might be a stuck thermostat, making the sensor think the car is still cold making it too lean. But like I said before, I know the batteries of the SI board need to be changed so I am not sure if I trust the temp. gage. What is a normal temp. for the car? My gas millage seems to be terrible lately so I think I am having a fuel problem. I have heard that when it is cold fuel consumption is increased, but today was pretty warm and I never smelled fuel when it was colder. Sorry so long, any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks guys Tim Atl.
