When I fixed my sunroof motor, I had to remove it, so yes, I removed the headliner. I also had to remove the motor to realign the switch relative to the roof, so based on my experience, the answer to your question is yes, you have to remove the front headliner.

Ron, do you need to remove the front headliner section (with the visors in it) to adjust the position of the motor. After replacing my cables, I need to reset the positining of the sunroof according to the auto stop switch. I don't know how to do this.
